It’s nearly time for the largest player organised event across the world of gaming, Hulkageddon IV: Tears of Veldspar, is threatening the "Carebear" world of industrialists in Eve Online from 19th February to 28th February 2011.
Eve Online is the most consistently growing MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) that has been on out computer screens since May 2003 set in New Eden. Eve Online is a true sandbox game where the playing community has total control over their future with only a little help from CCP, the game makers.
Hulkageddon Background - an in-game event of Eve Online
Over the last few years a character in Eve, Helicity Boson, has created Hulkageddon which is a nine day event of suicide attacking mining vessels going about their business in the numerous asteroid belts. In high security space pilots are protected by the in-game police, Concord, but there can be a few minutes where criminal characters can attack law abiding pilots and destroy them, but they in turn will always be destroyed.
In the event last year over 1,200 mining vessels were destroyed , with the winner Sir Phil Macmannon earning over 6 billion ISK (Eve currency), numerous ships and skill books. All in-game ‘kills’ are verified by kill-boards so that players can see who is getting the most kills, and for miners to see where the safest mining areas are in New Eden.
Hulkageddon IV - Tears of Veldspar
Hulkageddon IV is set to dominate the world of Eve for nine days with mass suicide ganking of miners in the various asteroid belts and ice fields. Over the last year or so, it’s been quite noticeable that a large number of miners have been defying Hulkageddon and going about their daily business. This may be the reason that Helicity Boson has also added freighters to this years valid target list which could potentially affect the running of hauliers such as Red Frog who move well in excess of 3,000 contracts per month.
It will be interesting to see what happens this year with this new twist. It will certainly add a lot more targets to the Hulkageddon players but to what effect on major trade hubs such as Jita, Amarr, Rens and Dodxie? If trade routes are badly affected it may cause severe shortages of basic commodities and ships, which in turn will upset many industrialists who make their money on the market. On the other hand, the hauliers might take the same approach as many miners by ignoring Hulkageddon but just being a little more careful than usual.
Whatever happens this month, it is going to be an interesting time in Eve making the in-game motto of ‘fly safe’ a little more relevant.
